So 2010 is all about jobs, fiscal responsibility and the deficit but not immigration reform?
Then again, R. Kelly maintained his innocence(despite the tape). Polanski ADMITTED guilt!
I think it is exactly the opposite. The only reason Polanski is still being pursued by the police is BECAUSE he is a celebrity.
I challenge you to find a single rape case from 30 years ago that would have the Los Angeles police flying to Sweden to close -- or that anyone has even heard of for that matter.
Even more importantly, the victim herself has publically decried the continuing investigation. She has no interest in continuing to relive it so that the LA Police can have their feather in their cap.
Can't anyone out there think of any better use for the investigative resources of the LA police than this? If you think this is reasonable, then why don't you think the same zeal should be used to pursue fugutives with non-celebrity status?
I am not defending Polanski or his actions - rather I am just pointing out if it were anyone else it would be long forgotten. Given that the victim also wants in forgotten, maybe its time to forget it.
just because nobody else can come forward about his depravity doesnt mean he hasnt preyed on little girls since then. Actually, he did, Natsja Kinski and she was 15 at the time in what people like us to believe was a consensual relationship --he being a good friend of her fucke up father and a 40+ year old man.
whatevs.
I noticed that, it's exactly my point. This isn't about justice for the victim, because the victim has moved on. It's about vengeance. Further I said nothing about the severity of the crime, nor about what crimes he may have committed since then. I agree with you, and am not defending his actions.
My point is very simple. The law should be applied with an even hand. Whenever a celeb gets away with something people are quick to point that out and accuse the system of treating high-profile people differently.
Apparently, that same attitude does not apply when the system does the opposite - and relentlessly pursues someone simply because they are a celebrity.
Same is true of Martha Stewart. She was made an example of for a crime that probably would have not even raised a blip had it been a man. Many women spoke out against her being made an example of. I agreed. Although the crime is different here, the situation is not.
I am absolutely ashamed of Whoopi Goldberg and Debra Winger, among others. The hypocrites! How dare they complain about how difficult it is for older women to get roles in sexist Hollywood or how difficult it is for black actresses in Hollywood when they acquiesce in Polanski's most heinous crime. Did Whoopi really say it wasn't "rape rape." Which part wasn't rape? The she said no part? The giving drugs and alcohol to a 13yr old part? The vaginal penetration part? The anal penetration part? In what universe is it OK for a 40 year old man to have sex with a 13 year old child?
What is this China? Oh no. We won't kill our daughters at birth because they can be sex toys for grown men. What message are these artists who called Polanski crime "une affaire de moeurs," a case of morals, sending to girls and women of this country, and any country, for that matter? The same one that Senator Kyl sent when he said maternity care shouldn't be a part of health care: the society will not protect girls or woman. Our ability to make decisions about our bodies is not our own. Forget about defending the right to choose an abortion. What about defending a girl's right to say no.
AMEN AMEN AND MORE AMENS!
It is incomprehensible to me that so many artists signed this petition. I hope that they were just confused and thought they were saving the whales and not child rapists.
The Pendulum Swing is WAY OUT THERE...
And what seems to be winning out is: MONEY!
Rape is Rape---Whoopie---just like you can't be a little pregnant-Whoopie.
Hers is the most disappointing to me.
He should be punished, if not here, whereever he goes, when he dies....BIG TIME.
Thank you Blogdiva for doing this work.
